Josephine “Joey” Moretti (née Coupet) is an American astronaut who volunteered to become an Uploaded Intelligence after the United States Government was informed of the technology.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
As a student at Columbia University, Joey graduated at the top of her class. When she was old enough, Joey enlisted in the United States Air Force and became a fighter pilot. She later joined NASA, became an astronaut and flew two ISS mission. At one point, she met and married Jake Moretti and became stepmother to his sons Oliver and Brandon.
At one point, she volunteered for Project Ares, a one-way mission to Mars. However, she possessed a rare form of arrhythmia that could cause trouble if she remained in orbit for too long and was cut, much to her frustration.
Upload[]
Several months later, Joey was informed of uploaded intelligence and told she would be the first American to upload. Joey agreed to be uploaded so long as her family could keep in contact with her. When informed of the flaw, Joey still agreed to be uploaded, only informing her sister Pasha of the flaw and having her sister swear to secrecy. After informing her husband, Jake was against the idea, but did not stop her from uploading. A cover story was created about her dying in a plan crash.
Joey adapted quickly to the digital landscape and, upon seeing Laurie Lowell's message about uploads, is surprised to learn she is not the first American upload.
Meeting Caspian[]
After the Internet Shutdown, Joey started to become irritated after not being kept out of the loop. One day, she received a visit from Caspian Keyes, who logged into her server from a private encrypted line set up in her family’s home after telling her husband and stepsons about the flaw. Annoyed, Joey asked Caspian why he is there. He explains that he can cure Joey of her flaw, but she would have to agree to keep the other UIs in check. Joey assumes he is threatening to let her die if she refuses to do so and kicks Caspian out of her server. Shortly after, Jakes logs on and asks Joey why she did not tell him about the flaw. Joey says she wanted to keep them from worrying as she was already giving up her physical body. Jake fears losing Joey a second time and angrily declares he will save her, Joey tries and fails to calm him down before he leaves.
After Jake threatens to shoot Maddie Kim, Caspian agrees to cut Joey and logs back into her server. However before she can be cured, MIST, the cure, refuses as every time she has cured a UI or attempted to cure one, death or the threat of death has followed. MIST asks to speak to Maddie and, after Maddie answers MIST's questions, she cures Joey. Jake and Pasha log on to her server too and she demonstrates her newfound power. When Stephen Gold, her handler, checks in on her after noticing she was moving dangerously fast, Joey says she was just stir crazy and he leaves. Joey thanks Caspian for curing her but states she is not her ideal UI guardian.
Fighting Safesurf and Holstrom[]
After obtaining a message from Vinod Chanda about Stephen Holstrom creating a pandemic, he does not believe Joey. He rejects Joeys suggestion to give her a path to make her immune to SafeSurf as it is above his jurisdiction and she is still at risk, to his belief, of falling victim to the flaw. To get Gold to let her fight, Joey reveals she has been cured and he lets her go. She joins the fight just as Holstrom gains the upper hand on Caspian, who uploaded himself after failing to find a suitable candidate. During the fight, Safesurf entered the mix. Caspian restrains Holstrom as Joey reluctantly leaves.
After the fight, she debriefs her superiors on the fight.
Appearance[]
Joey is a woman of African American descent who brown hair styled into a military regulation cut, brown eyes, and a dark complexion.
After uploading, Joey kept her hair in a large Afro and wore a white body suit.

Joey is loyal to her family and country, willing to sacrifice herself for the greater good. She is untrusting of people she does not know.
