As they want the protests from their hotel room, they talk with MIST. Maddie flashes back to the plane as she asks Caspian what is happening. Caspian theorizes that by mixing the code of two UIs, he created a sentient program, kind of like a teratoma tumor. Maddie wants to destroy it, but Caspian stops her as he does not have the resources to make anything one. In the present, they talk to MIST and ask her if she cured Holstrom. Mist confirms it and states she freed them after Holstrom ordered their deaths. Caspian thanks MIST as Maddie asks for proof that MIST is indeed her sister. MIST shows some of their father’s code and Maddie states to get unsettled and shuts the laptop. Caspian apologizes for dragging her into their current situation as he resolves to take responsibility for his own creation. He then suggests Maddie visit her mother as he tries to figure out a way to contact Joey Coupet. Maddie is fearful, thinking her mother does not know her whereabouts, but goes.
Maddie arrives at her mother’s hotel and sees her in the restaurant. Ellen joyfully greets her daughter before reprimanding Maddie for going to Svalbard. Maddie tells Ellen Logorhythms kept a copy of David’s upload before deleting it, angering Ellen. After Maddie asks about her parents having a second child and learning she practically demanded a sibling in kindergarten, she tells her mother Caspian cracked integrity and has the cure with him. Surprised, Ellen insists Maddie tell Senator Rivera about the cure, but Maddie rejects the offer as she fears what will happen to Caspian. As Senator Rivera arrives, Ellen pleads with her daughter to reconsider, but Maddie tells her mother to trust her, she asks for two more days before walking away. As Senator Rivera apologizes for being late, she asks Ellen about something she mentioned on audition information on Norway. Looking at Maddie, Ellen simply mentions Peter Waxman as Senator Rivera states he is not helping. Ellen mentions Waxman creating a program to track UIs and that his research might lead to a way to safely get back online.
When Maddie returns to the hotel room, she finds Caspian planning how to contact Joey. He theorizes that she is housed in a server connected to the SIPRNetand suggests hacking into a Department of Defense contractor to contact her when Maddie suggests contacting her family. She tells Caspian Joey agreed to upload if her family could remain in contact with her. While Caspian is hesitant, Maddie convinces him.
When they reach the Moretti house, Jake Moretti answers the door and they tell him they know his wife is a UI and they have the cure for the flaw. Jake asks what they mean and, after Caspian explains what the flaw is, he tells them to leave or he will get his gun. He closes the door on them and Caspian turns to leave as Maddie compares this to the first time her mother met Cody Lowell. Soon, Joey's sister Pasha Coupet reprimands them for revealing the flaw to Jake and the boys. After Jake fearfully asked if Joey is truly dying, Pasha has them come to to cure her sister.
After docking in Hamburg, Germany, Renee rents a care with the greatest tech complicity and plugs in Holstrom. After teasing him on his British accent, he switches to an American accent and talks control of the car. He explains that they are going to Ramstein Air Force Base to get onto the SIPRNet to access a communications satellite owned by the Indian government. Renee states she does not understand while Holstrom expresses his frustration at Caspian completing his life's work and not understanding why. Renee calms him down and thinks of a plan to get him in, but not out. Holstrom promises to find her again once the internet is back online.
In the Moretti's living room, Maddie and Caspian explain their experiences with UIs as Pasha expresses her doubts about the cure. After things get heated, Jake has his sons go upstairs. As they do, Oliver takes the bag containing the cure. As Caspian explains that speed is the main factor in execrating the flaw, Maddie realizes that Pasha not only moved in to look after her nephews, but to also be able to talk to her sister. After a brief pause, they convince the adults to let them talk to Joey.
In Oliver’s room, he plugs in the drive as Brandon asks to see it. Oliver tells him no as his brother starts a cry. He gives Brandon a figurine and, as soon as it is activated, it speaks full sentences and Reign of Winter and MIST introduces herself to the brothers and explains she is a CI, Brandon is impressed while Oliver is skeptical.
In a facility, Waxman is lead to a room in handcuffs, he is greeted by Senator Rivera and Stephen Gold. Senator Rivera mentions his tracking program and offers Waxman a full pardon and immunity if he helps them integrate his tracking program into a program that can destroy UIs. As Waxman laments on how they got to this, Senator Rivera says this is the only way he can atone for his part.
At Ramstein Air Force Base, a car rushes through security and is quickly delt with. They find it empty and only a drive is found inside. They plug it in to investigate as Holstrom enters the SIPRNet. As Renee watches the plan unfold, she says goodbye to Holstrom. Once in the satellite, Holstrom runs into Vinod Chanda, Han Ping, and Zhong Shuchun. At first they are reluctant to believe it is really him, but Holstrom shows them evidence that he is who he says he is and Chanda and Ping believe him. However Zhong remains unconvinced and attacks Holstrom, attempting to use his code to fix Bai Fu. However Holstrom makes quick work of Zhong.
Caspian logs into Joey's server and she represents him for using the encrypted side for her family and informing them of the flaw. After revealing she knows who he is, Caspian tells Joey he will cure her only if she agrees to police the other UIs. After accusing Caspian of testing her to save her life, she kicks him out. Caspian falls back on on his chair and passes out. Maddie and Pasha tend to him as Jake logs in to speak with his wife. He asks Joey why she did not tell him about the flaw. Joey says she wanted to keep them from worrying as she was already giving up her physical body. Jake fears losing Joey a second time and angrily declares he will save her, Joey tries and fails to calm him down before he leaves. In the meantime, Caspian pulls Maddie aside and tells her they need to leave as Dr. Gold knows they are there. Maddie tells him Joey is just agitated from being cut off for so long. As they speak, Jake grabs his gun and, in a fit of rage, demands Caspian cure his wife and Pasha desperately tries to stop him. With a gun in his face, Caspian calmly tells Jake to shoot him.
Holstrom uses Zhong's code and his basic understanding of how Caspian cracked integrity in an attempt to cure Chanda and Ping. While he makes them stronger, and alters their appearances, Holstrom fails to cure them of the flaw, but promises to do so in due time if they join him.
When Caspian demands Jake shoot him, he hits the teenager with his gun and threatens to kill Maddie. Caspian agrees to cure Joey, but finds the drive missing. They find it in Oliver's room as he and Brandon play with MIST. The others find them and Pasha stays with the brothers, trying to explain why their father is acting this way. As Jake listens in, Caspian attempts to cure Joey. However, before he can, MIST refuses as everything she has cured someone, it has lead to someone dying or someone order or threatening to kill someone. Joey accuses Caspian of letting her die as he reveals his sole existence was to crack integrity and, as such, it is his responsibility to find a suitable UI to serve as the leader of the rest. Before curing Joey, MIST asks to speak with Maddie. While she is hesitant, Jake hands her a virtual reality headset and asks her to try. When Maddie logs in, MIST greets Maddie and asks her sister why she hates her. Maddie says she does not hate MIST and always wanted a little sister, but the timing of MIST coming into her life was not ideal as she was mourning their father a third time. MIST accepts this and cures Joey. As Joey ravels in her new power, it attracts the attention of her superiors. When Dr. Gold checks in, she claims she is just stir crazy. Joey suggests Maddie and Caspian leave before Dr. Gold gets a chance to send agents over. When Joey rejects Caspian's offer to be the UI god, she does promise to do what she signed up for. The teenagers log off as Joey's sons log on.
