Biography[]
Supervising Project Caspian[]
After Stephen Holstrom organized Project Caspian, Van Leuwen was brought in to interview Holstrom on his life experiences and, after Holstrom's death, he organized a plan to groom Holstrom's clone, Caspian Keyes, into an exact mental copy of Hostrom so that integrity is cracked.
Bumps in the Road[]
Seventeen years later, Van Leuwen and Deirdre Ryan learn that Caspian has started contacting Maddie Kim, the daughter of David Kim, the company’s Uploaded Intelligence. As Ryan fears the negative impact this could have, Van Leuwen believes very little is at risk as they knew they project would have variables due to the different time periods. When Ryan suggests terminating the project to Julius Pope, he berates her for even suggesting it.
After Renee and Cary Duvall reenact the day Holstrom's father broke his mother’s arm and walked out, he, Ryan, and others wait in a safe house in the desert and congregate Cary when he arrives. However Cary simply goes to his room. Later, He and Ryan are debriefing Cary when Cary expresses his belief that not being in Caspian's life will cause trouble and that Renee is unstable. Ryan agrees with Cary, but says he is unstable as well and expresses her belief that the project should have been terminated long ago. Cary flies into a rage upon hearing this and Van Leuwen calms him down, saying they are not going to terminate anyone. Cary goes back to his room. Later, Van Leuwen and two men go to Cary's room to find it abandoned.
Looking for Cary and Caspian[]
When they are unable to find Caspian and Cary, he hears from Anssi that Pope is in Holstrom's office, not believing him until he sees it. Van Leuwen deduces that Pope is angry they were hacked and Caspian is missing. Van Leuwen touches on Pope's fear of death and Pope states he hoped to be as brave as Holstrom as he knew he would never be as smart as him. Van Leuwen states that Caspian can still fulfill Holstrom's desire to crack integrity and their goal is not over. A few hours later, Van Leuwen informs Pope that Cary was recently checked into a hospital in Palo Alto by an unknown man. He suggests sending Ryan as she is already in the city.
In Palo Alto, he, Ryan, Pope, and Renee visit Cary in the hospital, posing as his family. Cary and Renee pretend to act lovingly and the nurse leaves. Renee tells Cary he is out of the inner circle and Pope brings up that Cary claimed to be shot by a mugger and berates him for revealing the truth to Caspian. Cary says he learned Rachel Brooks was an actor and revealing the truth was the only way to salvage the plan and that when they find Caspian, he will be the only one the boy will trust.
Meeting Caspian[]
When Caspian is brought to Norway, he and Ryan wait in the lab Caspian was made in and introduce themselves. Caspian backs away from Ryan when she tries to shake his hand and, upon seeing Renee, he picks up a try to defend himself, only backing down when Cary appears. As Pope tries to deescalate the situation, Caspian berates everyone there for trying to groom him to accomplish their own goals. Pope reveals they want to perfect upload so that humanity can have the resources it needs to flourish as it is overpopulated. Caspian fires his fake parents and announce his plans to break up the company. Ryan protests, but Pope gives in.
Resurrecting Holstrom[]
A few months after the internet is shut down, he, Pope, and Renee watch as Stephen Holstrom's brain is uploaded after Caspian finds the cure for the flaw. They hold hands in triumph and close their eyes as the brain is scanned. When Holstrom is uploaded, Van Leuwen asks him what to do with Caspian, and Holstrom orders him to be killed. When the FBI closes in on the black site, Van Leuwen urges Holstrom to go and unplugs him when helicopters enter their airspace. Renee berates Van Leuwin but he hands her Holstrom's neural grid and tells her to run as she is the only non-employee in the room. She agrees and flees with Holstrom. He, Anssi, Pope, and all other Logorhythms employees on sight are arrested.
