Reign of Winter is the third episode of the first season of the AMC+ animated sci-fi drama, Pantheon.
Synopsis[]
Chanda's life is on a loop; Maddie and David make up for time lost; Ellen tries to move on from her dead husband; Caspian watches his parents' marriage disintegrate while trying to start a romance of his own.
Plot[]
Unaware of his upload, Vinod Chanda continues to write code for Alliance and receives a call from his mother and his memory is erased at the end of each work day. In the real world, Ajit Prasad is amazed by Chonda's progress When the employee overseeing Chonda mentions emotional is being used to promote productivity, Prasad becomes annoyed but the man says it enough to keep him productive but not enough to make him aware. Prasad is pleased and leaves. Unknown to Chonda, he is being watched by an unknown entity.
At the Kim House, Maddie Kim is playing Reign of Winter. She calls for her father when she is struggling with a chimera. David Kim arrives and helps his daughter finish off the chimera. David says he was looking for Laurie Lowell, but cannot find her. They set out and David expresses his disbelief that Laurie helped him escape Logorhythms but has not contacted him since. David comments that Ellen Kim has not talked to him since he was freed as Maddie explains that she has had to work more since he died and that Ellen hates virtual reality. Just then, they are attacked by another party, but David breaks the game and kicks their attackers out. Logorhythms notices the spike and records it for when the tracking program is ready. Maddie berates her father for his actions and expresses her fears that the moderators could ban him and he could be hunted down by the NSA. She tells her father to act like he does not exist, to which he says his wife already thinks so. Maddie exits the game and agrees to talk to her mother for him.
At the Keyes House, Caspian Keyes is watching a video of Stephen Holstrom talking about Uploaded Intelligence as he thinks about an interaction he had with Hannah at school, telling her his personal life is none of her business. He browses through a dark web chat room that mentions that Logorhythms was attacked a second time in a week and Caspian types in that he believes the company is uploading human minds. Just then Renee walks in and apologizes for when Hannah visited. Caspian says he is looking into uploaded intelligence and Renee hides her shock as Caspian explains the process to her and shows her a video. She leaves as Caspian theorizes where they would do it. She goes to her car and calls Julius Pope to inform him of Caspian's current actions. Pope says they are monitoring him and tells her to focus on an act she is to perform the following day to insure Caspian experience the inflection point.
Back in India, Chonda is going about his supposed day when the entity pounds on the window of his office and breaks in. However, the employee overseeing him resets Chonda and he forgets the incident and Chonda goes about his day again.
Back in San Clemente, Renee and Cary are looking at hammers for the infection point and they have a small argument over picking a new hammer as the one they have is dirty. Renee tells Cary to take pride in his last day of work and he walks off. Renee thinks of an intimate moment she shared with Holstrom when he expresses the benefits of being uploaded once they crack integrity, only to be interrupted by Cary. Cary comes back with a hammer and hands it to Renee.
At Maddie's school, she is having lunch with Justine when she asks Maddie why she wanted her to accompany her to her meeting at the mall. Justine asks Maddie about her plans and Maddie mentions her parent's current relationship status. Justine reveals her parents were the same before their divorce, but Maddie insists they will stay together and plans to trick them into getting back together. Justine criticizes her plan as Maddie expresses her fears that her mother might marry her boyfriend.
Ellen gets a call from David at work and hangs up immediately. Gabe soon walks in to confirm if they are still on for that night. Ellen says she will be late as Maddie is making dinner. Gabe leaves and Ellen stares at her phone.
In India, Chonda is working on patterns when the entity reappears. It breaks Chonda out of his illusion and shows him his uploaded, along with the entity’s own upload. Chonda remembers everything and realizes the entity is a victim like himself.
In Norway, Pope is reflecting on the damage Laurie did when he is informed Caspian is close to finding their black site. Caspian sees pictures from construction, but Anssi switches them out before Caspian can take a screenshot. Caspian witnesses this and is confused.
At the Kim House, Maddie is preparing dinner and has put her father on a laptop in a chair. She calls down her mother as David expresses doubt and reveals he called Ellen at work. When Ellen walks in, she is surprised to see the set up and David apologizes. Ellen walks over to the laptop and closes it. Maddie berates her mother for treating her father like this but Ellen insists that the person on the screen is not her husband. Ellen insists the two talk, but Maddie insists they talk as a family and David begs Ellen to listen. Ellen leaves and Maddie apologizes to her father. David is silent for a bit and asks who Gabe is.
At Gabe's house, he and Ellen are watching a zombie movie when she asks him to turn it off. He does and as they are about to kiss, the lights flicker and David hacks into Gabe's devices. Ellen chastises David, but says nothing to Gabe about it. Gabe insists she try, but she stays silent and Gabe kicks her out, ending their relationship.
At home, Ellen insists Maddie help her speak with David and she makes her mother an avatar. David arrives and she says that she has no idea what to think of David and cannot be with him. Ellen states she mourned him for two years and says she cannot be with him as they once were. David agrees that he cannot describe what he is and states she hurt him by saying he is not human and his love for his family kept him going. The two break up on good terms and laugh at the circumstances of the breakup as Maddie cries in the hallway.
At the Keyes house, Renee takes pain killers and they stage a fight. Renee gets ready to have her arm broken but, when Cary hesitates, she grabs the hammer and breaks her own arm. Caspian enters the room and, seeing what he thinks is an attack on his mother, he grabs his father by the shirt and punches him in the face as his mother pleads for him to stop. He throws Cary to the ground as Cary leaves and walks out on them. Before driving off, Cary swears not to support them. As his mother panics, Caspian vows to take her to the hospital and care for the both of them.
Back at the Kim house, Ellen and David laugh at his interference with her date as as remembers she ended two relationships that night and the two sing Pearl Jam's “I'm Still Alive” as Maddie walks in. Ellen tells her how her father supposedly won her over from Eddie Vedder, which Maddie does not believe.
As Cary drives, he speaks to Pope and explains what happened during the inflection point and says he will miss Caspian. Pope hangs up as he is about to speak at a tech conference. When he gets off the stage, Prasad speak with him, hinting that he stole Logorhythms technology on uploaded intelligence, much to Pope's concern.
Back in India, Chonda questions how to get out when the entity suggests he copy himself. He does not know how to do so as he is reset.
Back in San Clemente, Hannah is leaving the track when Caspian approaches her. She ignores him as Caspian apologizes for his behavior and states his love for her. Hannah returns his feelings and they kiss. He carries her bag as she notices his bloody knuckles. On the highway, Cary pulls over to cry. In India, Chonda figures out how to make a copy of himself and escapes.
