We were close, weren't we?—Stephen Gold, to Julius Pope, Crack Integrity
Dr. Stephen Gold is a high ranking scientist at DARPA.
Biography[]
The cure and the cause[]
After Uploaded Intelligence is leaked to the American government and other top cyber powers, Dr. Gold and Admiral Kurtz go to Logorhythms for help with the project. Kurtz and Gold reveal they are working on uploaded intelligence and need their help as they encountered the Flaw, unaware that Logorhythms started the project. Julius Pope and Peter Waxman act surprised by the knowledge and lie that their research on the topic ended after encountering the flaw. Waxman gets the NSA agents what they need as Pope asks for the NSA to track down Caspian, claiming they could use him on their team for the topic.
Later, he is part of a team who recruits astronaut Joey Coupet to become the believed first American UI. After a message from Laurie Lowell goes public about UIs, Joey asks him about Laurie, believing she was the first American to be uploaded, as he leaves her to look into it.
Time spent in Svalbard[]
After the Internet Shutdown, Dr. Gold is at the Svalbard data center trying to cure the Flaw. Caspian Keyes, as project leader, is desperate to discover the cure for the flaw to introduce a way of policing potentially dangerous UIs, giving the shutdown another month before large scale protests force the internet back on. However no one is sure how fix the flaw as it is neurobiological rather then digital, something that stops everyone present from thinking of a solution. He insists that one a cure is found, it be given only to an American UI as Caspian sarcastically retorts that he is only stating the obvious. After the meeting ends, an annoyed Dr. Gold asked Pope why Caspian is present as Pope just says to trust him.
When a former Logorhythms employee is caught infiltrating the site, Dr. Gold asks what the situation is as Pope states it is nothing serious as he takes care of it.
A few days later, when Renee and Maddie Kim are bright to Svalbard, he questions Caspian on why he has the power to remove people and the two get into small fight until Pope deescalated the situation and tells everyone to take a break.
During a brief power outage, Dr. Gold rushes to Caspian to chastise him for almost destroying their work. Caspian and Pope resaaurehim the it is a simple system stress test, keeping the fact they found a cure to the flaw from him. Later, Dr. Gold is informs Pope that Ellen let congress know about the Data Center and they have two hours before the FBI arrives from a field office in Copenhagen and informs Pope. Pope volunteers to stay behind and act as a scapegoat while he get his team and the critical research out, so long as Dr. Gold makes his imprisonment as comfortable as possible. The two then say their goodbyes.
Developing SafeSurf[]
After Logorhythms is shut down, Dr. Gold and Senator Elaine Rivera meet with an imprisoned Waxman, with the men pretending not to know each other, to offer him full immunity and a pardon if he helps the NSA utilize his tracking program into a weapon to seek and destroy UI. As Waxman laments on how they got to this, Senator Rivera says this is the only way he can atone for his part.
Later, he sees an anomaly with Joey's server, two spikes, and becomes concerned. Waxman just assumes she is restless as Dr. Gold informs him of the spikes. He checks in on Joey, who simply says she is stir crazy, and he hangs up, keeping the fact that she was just cured of the flaw from him.
When SafeSurf is completed, he oversees a trial run as it seeks and destroys Arkady Koslov, the Russian UI. He is told that the artificial intelligence incorporated into the program is evolving faster than they thought it would. Waxman chastises Dr. Gold for incorporating AI as it would make SafeSurf harder to control. Dr. Gold simply states it is a countermeasure to stay one step ahead of the UIs.
Denying a pandemic[]
After Waxman receives word from Vinod Chanda that Stephen Holstrom had his cryogenically preserved brain uploaded and plans to start a pandemic in retaliation for SafeSurf, he calls for a meeting with the Center for Disease Control which Dr. Gold, Admiral Kurtz, and Senator Rivera attend. While Senator Rivera vogues for Waxman, Kurtz and Dr. Gold seek to undermine Waxman's claims, trying to distance themselves from Logorhythms. As Waxman did not provide information on which vaccines were tainted, Dr. Moore does not follow through on Wasman's warnings.
After Joey receives word from Chanda about Holstrom's virus, she connects Dr. Gold, who already knows and states it is being looked into. Joey asked to be let loose and given a patch to make her immune to SafeSurf, but it is not possible as SafeSurf is a United Nations project. Joey asks again and Dr. Gold states that they are also keeping her put because of the flaw. Hearing this, Joey considers telling him she is cured.
After Caspian uploads and dies stopping Holstrom, he attends Joey's debriefing.
