The Gods Will Not Be Chained is the fourth episode of the first season of the AMC+ animated sci-fi drama, Pantheon.
Synopsis[]
David learns how to maximize his power from an unlikely source; Maddie and Ellen find out they aren’t alone; Cary questions the plan; Caspian gets closer to Hannah and the truth; Chanda seeks revenge.
Plot[]
In Mumbai, Ajit Prasad arrives home and is unknowingly being watched by Vinod Chanda. As Prasad takes a shower, the staff receive a message to take the night off and Chonda floods the garage with gasoline. Prasad exits the shower when it gets too hot and meets up with his wife and daughter. When they comment on the lack of staff, an explosion goes off and Chonda shows the video of his upload. Prasad tells his wife and daughter to tell the emergency staircase as he finds their son Arun. Arun, who is wearing earplugs as he is swimming., is unaware of what is happening as he is steamed into the pool. Prasad calls his company to warn them Chonda is out as Chonda speaks with him. Prasad begs Chonda to spare his family, but Chonda wants him to suffer and lose everything. Arun notices he is trapped just as his father reaches the pool and explosion goes off. Prasad sees his wife and daughter huddled on a lower balcony and climbs ivy to the helicopter pad, but not helicopter is present and all members of the Prasad family are killed in the fire.
At a sporting goods store, Renee and Caspian Keyes are buying a gun for protection from Cary when Renee reveals she will have to sell the house without Cary's income. However, Caspian reveals he has been helping companies find bugs in their systems for money and promises to take care of the two as they are shown handguns.
In the desert, Cary arrives at a safe house and is greeted by Deirdre Ryan, Karl Van Leuwen, and other Logorhythms employees. Van Leuwin presents Cary with a number one dad t-shirt, and Cary heads off silently to his room.
In a dream, Maddie Kim takes her father to school as Peter Waxman appears and takes her lunchbox with her father in it away from her. Maddie calls after him and wakes up. She logs onto Reign of Winter and finds David Kim at the edge of the playable world and tells him they should move. Maddie asks David where his server is and he answers Oregon. Maddie asks what her father looks like outside of the game and he gives her a link. Maddie arrives in a replica of David’s office in a floating chibi form and sees her father as a two dimensional figure. David explain life before Maddie freed him when Laurie Lowell arrives. Laurie accuses David of doing something to her as Laurie attacks David and kicks out Maddie.
In a panic, Maddie contacts Caspian and gives her Justine's phone number. Caspian chastises her for ghosting him and Maddie promises to explain everything if they talk. Caspian heads to his local comic shop and, after buying an issue of his favorite comic, is given the owner’s phone. Maddie goes to Justine’s house and pleads with her to use her phone. Justine relents once Maddie agrees to buy cookies. Maddie speaks with Caspian and Caspian chastises her before Maddie says she was warned to stay away by Laurie but Laurie attacked her father. Caspian asks for her name and threatens to hang up if she does not. Maddie gives him her name and says she lives in Sacramento and Caspian gives her his real name. Caspian says he found a proposition logical problem on the dark web, he solved it and they started talking. Caspian says he gave Laurie her chat logs because it reminded him of how he and Laurie communicated and asks why she told Maddie not to talk to him. Maddie confirms Caspian does not know the Lowells and Maddie reveals Logorhythms is watching him and he mentions Norway and Uploaded Intelligence. Maddie says goodbye as Caspian mentions he thinks Logorhythms changed images on him and Maddie mentions Laurie said he was being watched two weeks ago and hangs up.
In Norway, Julius Pope is leading about Prasad's death as Waxman calls. He informs Waxman of the incident and has him offer Alliance their help.
At the Kim House, Ellen Kim is looking at Laurie's obituary and finds it strange that she cannot find pictures of her husband. The doorbell rings and Maddie answers it. Cody Lowell barges in with something in his pocket and angrily asks what she did with his wife. Ellen pepper sprays him as Cody falls to the floor and a flashlight falls out of his pocket. Maddie introduces Cody and Ellen backs off. Ellen gets Cody eye drops and he apologizes and thanks them for not calling the police. Ellen says it is not off the table as Maddie and Cody insist Laurie first contacted Maddie. Cody says Laurie has been different since breaking David out and that he was responsible for something and that it was why she wanted to break him out, much to Maddie's shock.
In David’s service, Laurie insists David designed her mind to disintegrate as David insists he did not give her a flaw but offers to fix her. He goes to his computer but Laurie insists it would take too long and that there is another way.
In the Kim's living room, Cody tells Ellen and Maddie how he and Laurie met and how her career soared while his stagnated. Cody then tells them when they were heading to a cabin in upstate New York, they were fighting and Laurie finds a vinyl record of When in Rome's “The Promise”, a surprise Cody wanted to give her when they reached the cabin. Laurie puts the song on her phone and has Cody pull over. She unbuckles and straddles him and they start making out until they are hit from behind by a drunk driver. Cody was unharmed, but Laurie lost the tower half of her body and becomes comatose. At the hospital, Cody watches his wife in horror as Pope and Waxman arrive and say they might be able to preserve his wife’s mind. He lets them but they said it failed. Eventually, Cody goes up to the cabin and When in Rome's “The Promise” starts playing on the television, his phone, and the car at the same time. A picture of him and Laurie appears on his phone and he knew she was alive. They figured out how to communicate and see each and Laurie gives Cody advice on how to make money on the stock market and he buys servers for her before eventually finding out about David.
At the Keyes house, Caspian is running a scan on his computer as Hannah looks at his comics. He tells Hannah about favorite comic, Parasite, as his computer scan comes up clean. Caspian tells Hannah he thinks his life is fake and she suggests it might have something to do with his father, to which Caspian says he has not felt that feeling since his father left, but something came up earlier that reignited that feeling. Hannah asks why, but he does not elaborate and they kiss.
In a flashback,Cary cooes over baby Caspian as Renee says she has no sexual interest in Cary. Cary insists they try to get along and Renee agrees. In the present, Cary is speaking to Van Leuwen and he says that leaving Caspian alone with Renee is bad for the plan and that Renee is unstable. Renee, who is on speaker, lashes out and Van Leuwen hangs up. Ryan expresses her belief that Cary is just as unstable as Renee along with the whole operation and suggests they should have terminated the project when Caspian was young. Cary berates them for suggesting they terminate Caspian and Van Leuwen say no one is being terminated. Cary heads to his room as Van Leuwen and Ryan look at each other with concern.
In David’s service, Laurie tries to help David escape, but he is unable to. She begs him to think like a code and not a programmer and tells him to get creative. David is unable to and she attacks him. David thinks of Maddie and fights her off.
In the Kim house, Ellen tucks Maddie in before meeting Cody on a back patio. Ellen suggests Cody turn off Laurie’s server, which is the equivalent of putting her in a coma, as she voices her frustration on David saying he wanted to upload. She voices her confusion at how Cody and Laurie can still have their relationship. Cody says it is almost the same as when Laurie was alive and says she behaves like she did and they have found workarounds for intimate moments. Cody says he cannot put Laurie in a coma as Ellen voices her concern for the dangers an unstable UI could do.
Back in the server, Laurie asks David how he fought her off and David picks up a picture of his family. Laurie says he feels love and he starts to see her in three dimensions. David finally breaks free, but Logorhythms finds him.
At the safe house, Van Leuwen knocks on Cary's door with two guards and enters to find to empty. Cary runs towards the highway and flags down a truck. He gets in and it drives off.
Back at the Kim house, Cody struggles to shut off Laurie’s server, but Ellen encourages him. Just as he is about to, he and Maddie get notifications. Cody takes out haptic gear and lends a vest to Maddie. He scans her face so that she would look more like her. Maddie goes her room and puts on the gear and, upon seeing her father in three dimensions, hugs him for the first time in two years. David reveals that his and Laurie’s “cages” have combined for the time being and explains that Laurie has a flaw that causes her mind to decay over time the faster she moves. As they watch Laurie explain this to Cody, Maddie realizes her father has it as well.
Caspian returns home to find a note saying his mother is at the doctor and he goes to his room and reads parasite. Reading a panel and remembering what Maddie told him, Caspian takes apart his computer case to find a Logorhythms chip. He calls his mother, but then a thought occurs. He takes apart his phone and finds a second chip, much to his shock. Caspian goes to the doctor and the nurse says she left. Caspian drives around and finds her car. When he investigates, he finds his mother talking to Hannah. He hides behind a post as Hannah says Caspian told her his life did not feel real to him. She berates Hannah for nearly destroying the job and orders her to speak with Caspian again. Renee, unaware Caspian was listening in and is now in a state of shock.
